So far so good. It hasn’t been easy- not at all! Adjusting to a new place, coming from a place that is the complete opposite of the present place- it is a lil overwhelming. Especially when you are doing it alone. Living in the east side of Manhattan, things are very busy and constantly changing.
Luckily, I am not completely alone. I am currently attending NYU’s Summer Publishing Institute, where I am pursuing a Certificate in Publishing. This graduate certification program consists of all-day lectures and workshops almost everyday, with a few weeknights and weekends off.
The lectures are truly amazing however, for the most part. I had no idea how much diverse work is involved in publishing. Publishing is some serious work! There are so many various aspects of the industry. I am in shock at how much there is to learn and absorb of this unique field, and of why most colleges in the US are not teaching it adequately- if at all. NYU’s publishing program teaches more than just writing and editing. Unlike most colleges, NYU’s program teaches students the design, production, digital, management, finances, and futuristic aspects of the industry. I am truly blessed and in awe to be learning all of these great fields. I am getting true, insider info and years worth of experience in six long and tiring weeks.
Besides the program, adjusting to the city is not so bad for me. Coming from Dallas, where it is hot, hot & hotter- to cool, rainy, and dirty NYC- I am still adjusting. Learning the subways and walking everywhere is a new thing for me. Everything here is more expensive, the streets are filthy, and the people are aloof and rigid, BUT it is NYC- and there are beautiful parks and buildings that really take your breath away. Also, this IS where the publishing industry thrives and where most of the jobs and top companies live still.
