Even the old folks laughed as Seth Meyers started strong on the topic of Texas trying to secede from the US. He joked that Texas is too big to leave the US, and would give Alaska more clout as the largest state, even though clearly hardly anyone lives there. He then easily slid into politics which is always a treat for people, especially the older crowd, who would later squirm in their seats when his jokes geared back toward the college age as he talked about breasts, photos of genitals, make-outs on futons, and drunken fights and acts in Vegas. All are his real-life stories by the way.
Seth hit all the major politicians that night too. He gashed at Rick Perry and of course, former-President young Bush. He touched on President Obama also, as he told us all the times he met him, and how each time, Obama seemed to out-wit him. Seth always discussed real stuff in his jokes. He said the last election was like a new marriage for the US, with a new President (Obama). This year, this 2012 election was more like “we just didn’t get a divorce”, he said. The US chose to stick it out with this union, and stick with Obama. Which is probably why the results and victory were short celebrated. Seth uniquely admitted that Pres. Obama is hard to write about for SNL, because Obama is so cool and poised and naturally funny, that it is tough to pull from (unlike Bush & Perry!). He, of course, also joked about Romney’s wealth and how Romney always tried to hide it.
At the end of the night, after almost two hours of awesome jokes and crazy stories, the UTA students were able to do a Q&A with him, which was great too. Many came up to promote themselves and to share their blogs or writing with him. I was able to get what I thought I was coming for that night– insight and advice. He talked about his education, his big break of being discovered in a Chicago comedy club doing stand-up, & his advice on how to
be successful as a comedian and a writer. He said to adventure and try new things while you are young. Take risks and explore career options, this way you won’t look back and regret and wonder later in life. He also said to be different and to be original. Do not try to give people or the audience what you think they want to hear because that’s what they are used to in the past, he shared. All good advice.
So overall, an awesome success for UTA. Seth
Meyers was a speaker out of the ordinary for the UTA speakers series, and it worked well. It brought in new demographics to the event. And seriously, UTA should so sell DVDs of Seth’s comedic performance. It was so funny and touched on real topics. I’d buy a copy!
